If you don’t write it down it didn’t happen – or won’t!

Do you lack the ability to commit to yourself when it comes to getting the healthy lifestyle choices you’ve made completed? Here are some tips and a free tracker to help you get on track!

What gets scheduled gets done.

Write the days and times you plan to get movement into your calendar just as you would for an important appointment. Treat your daily activity like a commitment to someone else. Don’t cancel, and don’t be late.

Remember, the key is to start with something. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Just COMMIT to it.

What gets measured gets done.

If you really want to see how active (or inactive) you are, get an activity tracker like a Fitbit to see how many steps you walk and how many calories you burn during the day.

If you like to walk, hike or run regularly, download an app like Run Keeper, Nike + Running or Map My Walk to track your pace and distance.

I love to keep a training journal so that I can look back and see the progress I am making.

Fail to plan, plan to fail.

Get your workout clothes ready the night before. If you work out in the morning, put your workout clothes on before you do anything else. If you work out in the middle of the day or after work, make sure your workout clothes / shoes are packed in your car.

Keep a spare pair of running shoes and athletic clothing in your vehicle and/or at your office at all times just in case you do forget your gym bag at home.

This way you have no excuse to avoid your daily movement.

Take the path of least resistance.

Remember, you don’t have to spend hours at the gym to get the benefits of exercise. If you haven’t exercised in a long time, just find something you can do and do it regularly for 15 minutes every day.

Start with something simple like adding in a 15-minute walk. If you don’t have 15 minutes, break it into smaller chunks of time. 5 minutes here, and 5 minutes there adds up!

If you want to sign up for a gym membership or attend workout classes, pick a location that is easy for you to get to. Somewhere that is already on your way to or from work. Don’t choose a place that is completely out of your way, because you will find excuses to not go.
